Cronenberg’s ‘Eastern Promises’ to open Spanish film festival

SAN SEBASTIAN, Spain (CP) _ Canadian director David Cronenberg’s mob thriller "Eastern Promises" now has three major international festival screenings lined up for the fall.

The feature film, starring Viggo Mortensen as a Russian gangster, will open Spain’s 55th annual San Sebastian Film Festival in late September, organizers announced Tuesday.

That’s on top of its previously announced gala screening at the Toronto International Film Festival in early September, and an opening slot at the London Film Festival on Oct. 17.

"Eastern Promises" marks the first time Cronenberg has filmed a movie entirely outside of his home country and reunites him with Mortensen, who starred in his Oscar-nominated thriller "A History of Violence."

Shot in London, "Eastern Promises" also stars Naomi Watts as an innocent midwife who gets caught up in the organized crime family.

The San Sebastian Film Festival runs Sept. 20 to 29.

It will close with the British diamond heist drama "Flawless," starring Demi Moore and Michael Caine.
