Corus announces organizational changes, cuts 53 jobs

Corus Entertainment Inc. confirmed that 53 positions have been eliminated after a number of organizational changes in its Corporate and Television divisions.

The company has undertaken a comprehensive organizational review to ensure that it is structured efficiently and is appropriately aligned to achieve the goals of providing quality programming for its audiences and enhancing the service level to its clients.

The changes announced are a result of this review and include:

  * The Television division’s interactive team has been combined with Nelvana Studios. The integration was the first step in forming a content creation hub for Corus’ networks. These changes ensure a brand-focused approach for creating superior content for audiences across all platforms.

  * To streamline the reporting structure for Movie Central and Corus Kids, the responsibility for both acquisitions and original productions has been combined in each programming department.

  * To generate a consistent marketing strategy for all of Corus’ television brands, responsibility for cable and satellite client marketing will be handled by the consumer marketing team.

  * The Television division’s advertising sales group has made a number of changes to ensure high levels of customer service, platform and content innovation, and continued growth. These changes include: the creation of a platform innovation team; the creation of the role of Vice President, Non-Linear Business Development; the alignment of co-marketing resources under the brand sales teams and the realignment of the TELETOON and YTV sales teams to create one group dedicated to the kids demographic and another to the youth/adult demographic.

  * The Television division’s broadcast operations and post-production departments have been restructured to eliminate duplication and reduce costs.

  * The Information Technology department has been reorganized to enhance the current service level and also to prepare for the move of Corus’ Toronto-based employees to a new broadcast facility in 2009/10. These changes will ensure a seamless transition that will provide uninterrupted service levels to radio and television audiences.

Chorus’ television services currently include YTV, Treehouse, W Network, CMT, SCREAM, Discovery Kids, Telelatino and TELETOON (50%); Western Canada’s exclusive pay-TV movie service on six themed channels under the Movie Central brand; three local over-the-air television stations; Corus Custom Networks advertising services for television and Max Trax, a residential subscription digital music service.

As part of the change, the company plans to move to new facilities in the next two years.
