TVO, Yahoo! Canada ink programming deal

TORONTO TVO, Ontario’s educational public broadcaster, said Tuesday that it has pacted with Yahoo! Canada on a first-ever online programming deal.

The Toronto-based broadcaster said that its supply agreement will see Yahoo! Canada deliver educational content in both text and video to kids and their parents.

TVO has its own Web site that offers games, video and “TVO Kids”-branded TV series online. The public broadcaster also produces and airs a range of educational content on its 24-hour TV network, based in Toronto.

CEO Lisa de Wilde said that the distribution agreement with Yahoo! Canada extends TVO’s content strategy to target alternative distribution channels, while the broadcaster secures new revenue streams and business models.

Terms of the distribution deal were not disclosed. Yahoo! Canada said it will targets parents that go online in search of educational resources for their children, or looking for information on how to manage homework or fend off schoolyard bullies.

Parents will not have to pay for the TVO content on Yahoo! Canada for a likely period of one year. During that preview period, TVO aims to drive traffic to its online services. A TVO spokesman said that both parties will eventually introduce a “viable business model” for the educational content.
