New Toronto mega-studio Filmport officially opens for business

by Lowell Schrieder,
Marketing Director, PS Production Services Ltd.

August 21, 2008 // TO411 Daily – Toronto’s new, state-of-the-art, $60 million full-service production studio, Filmport, officially opened its doors with a widely attended invite-only media launch party/red carpet ribbon cutting ceremony.

Complimented by the attendance of mayor David Miller, along with other industry notables including acclaimed Canadian director, David Cronenberg, the tented outdoor event boasted a feeling of significant optimism for the future of Toronto’s struggling film and television sector.

With barbeques burning along with a bevy of summery cocktail options, the event made it easy to forget about the current struggles of our industry, allowing guests to re-shift their focus onto the fact that Filmport is a concrete representation (pun intended!) of the broader industry’s confidence in the future of film and television production in Toronto.

While it may take some time before Filmport sees some blockbuster business deals, the long-term vision appears to be solid. There was even a rumour circulating that two large productions may have their sights set on Filmport, Marvel Comics’ ‘The Avenger’ and ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. The World’, starring Juno’s Michael Cera.
