New Line, Alliance extend pact

New Line has extended its output deal with Canuck distributor Alliance Films until fall 2009.

Alliance had been set to lose the deal at the end of this year as New Line is being folded into Warner Bros.

Now it will release “Appaloosa,” directed by Ed Harris and toplining Viggo Mortensen, Renee Zellweger and Jeremy Irons; “Pride and Glory,” directed by Gavin O’Connor and starring Edward Norton, Colin Farrell and Jon Voight; “Four Christmases,” directed by Seth Gordon and starring Reese Witherspoon, Vince Vaughn and Robert Duvall; “Inkheart,” directed by Iain Softley and starring Brendan Fraser, Paul Bettany and Helen Mirren; “Seventeen Again,” directed by Burr Steers and starring Zac Efron and Matthew Perry; and “He’s Just Not That Into You,” directed by Ken Kwapis and starring Jennifer Aniston, Scarlett Johansson, Drew Barrymore and Ben Affleck.

Alliance has also clinched multi-year output deals with Relativity Media, Grosvenor Park and Freestyle Releasing for Canada, the U.K. and Spain.

The agreements are a major boost for Montreal-based Alliance, which hasn’t had it easy over the past year thanks to sluggish box office, the arrival of a major competitor in Canada and the U.K. in Entertainment One and the loss of its Canadian output deal for Miramax Films. All the deals are for four-to-six films per year.

The deal with Relativity is for Canada and the U.K., and it includes “A Perfect Getaway,” directed by David Twohy, starring Milla Jovovich; and “Brothers,” directed by Jim Sheridan and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Natalie Portman and Tobey Maguire.

The agreement with Grosvenor Park is for Canada only.

The deal with Freestyle gives Alliance rights to six pics for Canada, including “The Haunting of Molly Hartley,” directed by Mickey Liddell and starring Chace Crawford and Shannon Marie Woodward; and the animated feature “Delgo,” directed by Marc Adler and toplining the voices of Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddy Prinze Jr. and Val Kilmer.

Alliance also has output agreements for Canada with Focus Features, the Weinstein Co. and Overture Films. It expects to release 69 pics in Canada this year, 23 in the U.K. and 22 in Spain. Its market share for the first half of 2008 was 14.2% in Canada, 5.6% in the U.K. and 2.7% in Spain.
