Canadian producers honor Merilees
Friday September 05th 2008TORONTO — The Canadian Film and Television Production Assn. has given its Producers Award to Rob Merilees, who shepherded Toronto Film Festival closer “Stone of Destiny.”
The C$10,000 ($9.3 million) prize was presented Thursday at the 5th Elementt restaurant (home of the fest’s Match Club). CFTPA also announced it is extending the 3-year-old award for another five years.
Merilees’ credits include Terry Gilliam’s forthcoming “The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus,” “The Cleaner,” “Capote” and “The Snow Walker” among many others.
“Stone,” which gets its North American preem Sept. 13, was written and directed by Charles Martin Smith and stars Robert Carlyle, Billy Boyd and Brenda Fricker.
Pic is based on the true story of four Glasgow U. students who tried to “repatriate” an ancient coronation stone from London’s Westminster Abbey to Scotland in 1950.
The nonprofit CFTPA works on behalf of nearly 400 companies that produce or distribute English-language TV, features and interactive media across Canada.
