Film society honors Tom Hanks

US actor Tom Hanks will be honoured at the Lincoln Center’s 36th annual film gala in New York.

The society’s director, Kent Jones, said Hanks’ “talent, his presence, his versatility” had “set a very high standard for his fellow actors”.

Hanks, 52, won best actor Oscars for his starring roles in 1993 film Philadelphia and 1994’s Forrest Gump.

Last year, Meryl Streep, who starred in The Devil Wears Prada and Mamma Mia, was honoured.

A ceremony to honour Hanks’ career will be held on 27 April.

Speaking of Hanks, Jones said: “There are so few actors who have been able to make the struggle and drama of being a good man compelling.”

The Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts serves as home to 12 arts organisations.
