Maple Pictures adds industry vet to the roster

TORONTO, CANADA (September 16, 2008) – In a move reflecting Maple Pictures’ continued evolution into a Canadian distribution powerhouse, Jim Sherry, formerly Executive Managing Director of Alliance Atlantis MPD, has signed on as Maple’s Co-President, it was announced today by Maple Pictures founders and senior executives Laurie May and Brad Pelman. May will continue alongside Sherry as Co-President. Pelman will become COO of Maple Pictures, and will head up the new division Maple Films, which will grow as a distribution label.

“We are thrilled with Jim’s addition to our leadership team,” said May. “Jim possesses an unbeatable combination of dynamic energy and strong relationships with suppliers both in Canada and the US. Jim signing to a long-term agreement reflects our commitment to recruit the best and brightest executives to lead Maple’s continued growth.”

“This is an exciting time in Maple’s growth,” added Pelman. “Jim helped catapult his former studio to an industry leader during his long tenure there. Building on his well-respected relationships with Canadian and US filmmakers, we will work together to cement Maple’s status as an entertainment pacesetter.”

Maple Pictures showcased five films at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, including the recent acquisition HUNGER, the poignant story of the last months in the life of Irish Republican Bobby Sands directed by Steve McQueen, which won the prestigious Caméra d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and the Diesel Discovery Award at this year’s TIFF, and the critical sensation PONTYPOOL, the Canadian feature marking acclaimed director Bruce MacDonald’s first foray into the horror genre.

Upcoming Maple releases include the comedy MY BEST FRIEND’S GIRL starring Kate Hudson, Dane Cook and Alec Baldwin, Mike Leigh’s HAPPY-GO-LUCKY, the Oliver Stone directed biopic W. starring Josh Brolin, SAW V, the latest installment in the hugely successful horror franchise and the highly anticipated THE SPIRIT, helmed by Frank Miller. Maple Pictures is also the distributor behind critical sensation and Golden Globe® winner, MAD MEN, which has 16 Emmy nominations.
