Canada’s ‘Dance’ has a leg up

TORONTO – In a first for Canadian primetime, the homegrown series “So You Think You Can Dance Canada” has emerged as the No. 1 new fall TV show.

CTV’s Canadian version of the Fox series has beaten out all U.S. comers since its Sept. 11 bow. Wednesday’s performance episodes of “So You Think You Can Dance Canada” have averaged 1.36 million total viewers, according to BBM Nielsen Media Research.

The audition episodes of the Canadianized version of “So You Think You Can Dance” have drawn an average 1.16 million total viewers, while the results episodes have pulled in an average of 821,000 viewers, according to BBM Nielsen Media Research.

The next closest new fall TV show is the CW’s “90210” on Global Television, which is averaging 993,800 viewers Tuesday nights, and the A network’s Tuesday simulcast of Fox’s “Fringe,” which has drawn 677,000 viewers on average.

CTV also touts the performance of “So You Think You Can Dance Canada” in key demos. It ranks top of class among rookie series in the 18-34 and 18-49 demos, and is the No. 1 new fall series in the Toronto and Vancouver markets.

CTV said that the Canadian series is attracting even bigger audiences than the first three seasons of Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance,” which the Canadian network also airs.
