Filmport Studio activity picking up
Monday February 02nd 2009TORONTO — Last week’s resumption of talks between SAG and the studios is already paying dividends north of the border.
Toronto’s Filmport Studio, whose efforts to occupy its seven sound stages since opening in August were thwarted by the SAG-studio brinkmanship, has its first tenant signings.
The NBC Universal series “Warehouse 13” will begin shooting next month on two stages at Filmport under an AFTRA agreement.
Also set to shoot at the mega-studio in February is Atom Egoyan’s “Chloe,” the Julianne Moore/Liam Neeson starrer from Ivan Reitman’s Montecito Picture Co.
And Universal will shoot the adventure romance feature “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” at Filmport and the nearby Cinespace Film Studios complex.
Based on the novel by Canadian writer Bryan Lee O’Malley, the Michael Cera/Mary Elizabeth Winstead starrer is set in Toronto.
Stephen Waddell, national executive director of Canadian actors union ACTRA, said he hopes that Los Angeles producers will follow “Warehouse 13” and shoot their first season in Canada after they produced the pilot here.
Hans Fraikin, the Montreal-based film commissioner for the Quebec Film and Television Council, said that he hopes a speedy resolution of the SAG-studio talks will bring producers back to Montreal as well.
“Everyone from actors to technicians to producers on both sides of the border are fed up with the long-standing stalemate. Now we see a light of hope at the end of a long tunnel,” he said.
