Universal taps Cates for top tech gig

HOLLYWOOD — Universal Pictures has tapped Joseph Cates to be its top tech expert, upping the exec to senior VP of technology.

Cates will oversee the studio’s worldwide technology group and lead its efforts to develop technologies that facilitate the digital distribution of pics to consumers.

He will continue to manage content security and antipiracy technology matters for U.

“Technology is rapidly changing how our films are produced, distributed and viewed,” said Universal vice chairman and exec VP Rick Finkelstein. “Joe will be able to leverage his experience to develop the innovative technological solutions which are paramount to the success of our business.”

In addition to Finkelstein, Cates also reports to Craig Kornblau, prexy of Universal Studios Home Entertainment and Universal Pictures Digital Platforms.

He originally joined U’s new-media group in 1997 as director of technology and programming. In 1999, he was upped to VP, advanced technology, at Universal Music’s digital strategy and new-media group.

He ankled the studio in 2004 to join Microsoft’s media and entertainment technology group; in 2006 he returned to NBC Universal, where he served in a variety of technology strategy and policy roles.

He most recently served as VP of antipiracy technology and operations. Cates also serves as chairman of the DVD Copy Control Assn.
