  • De Niro, Pacino sue over watch ads

    Robert De Niro and Al Pacino sued a film distributor and watch company for Tutima watch advertisements tied to the 2008 film “Righteous Kill.” Both actors said in the lawsuit that a series of advertisements falsely suggested the two actors endorsed Tutima watches. The suit that names De Niro and Pacino as plaintiffs seeks damages from Overture Films, based in Los Angeles and Tutima, a German watchmaker. The series of promotions included one print advertisement that showed the actors faces and their names above a picture of a Tutima watch and a “Righteous Kill” video clip that appeared on Tutima’s Web site, the lawsuit said.

    Leaders of the Screen Actors Guild have signaled they’re exploring ways to end the stalemate with the congloms over the guild’s feature-primetime deal. With commercials contract talks recessed this week, SAG and the companies are expected to continue conducting back-channel efforts to find a compromise. In a recent message to supporters, the Unite for Strength faction noted that SAG negotiators must now balance the guild’s two biggest contract negotiations as the commercials contract launched Feb. 23, less than 36 hours after SAG’s national board rejected the AMPTP’s “last, best, final” offer.

  • ‘Slumdog’ slams past $200 million

    “Slumdog Millionaire” has crossed the $200 million mark at the worldwide box office, joining an elite group of indie titles to do that kind of business. Early weekend estimates had “Slumdog” coming in No. 2 at the international B.O. in the wake of its Oscar wins, behind Warner Bros.’ “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.” But more complete returns show “Slumdog” grossing roughly $15 million overseas for the weekend, while “Button” earned $14 million. The foreign rights for “Slumdog” were sold off by Pathe, meaning a patchwork of distribs.
