  • Starz gets $20.6 mil govenment boost

    Starz Media’s Starz Animation Toronto, one of Canada’s largest toon studios, has received a C$23 million ($20.6 million) boost from the provincial government’s Next Generation of Jobs Fund, Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty announced Tuesday. Elton John and his Toronto-born partner David Furnish were on hand to tubthump the studio, which is creating characters for CG musical “Gnomeo and Juliet,” produced by their Rocket Pictures and Miramax.

    It’s an exhilarating start to a promising career for a young Quebec filmmaker who scored a hat trick at the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, a sidebar of the Cannes Film Festival, for his French-language film “I Killed my Mother.” The screenplay, by 20-year-old Xavier Dolan, took the Art Cinema prize, the Regards Jeunes award and the SACD prize for best French-language film.
