Global Television fall schedule unveiled

TORONTO — Canada’s Global Television network unveiled a fall primetime schedule Wednesday with few tweaks and a slew of returning Fox and CBS series.

“We have a stable, reliable schedule, and there’s nothing people want more than that,” said Barbara Williams, executive vp content at parent Canwest Global Communications Corp., with an eye to TV viewers and advertisers bothered by incessant U.S. network schedule cancellations and disruptions.

On Tuesday nights, Global will simulcast CBS’ Tuesday night lineup, with “NCIS” at 8 p.m., followed by the rookie drama “NCIS: Los Angeles” at 9 p.m. and “The Good Wife” at 10 p.m.

And Global will slot the Seth MacFarlane executive-produced animated sitcom “The Cleveland Show” in at 8:30 p.m. on Sunday nights, where the network airs Fox’s animated sitcom lineup.

Also coming to Wednesday nights in the fall is Fox’s “Glee” at 9 p.m., followed by CW’s “Melrose Place” at 10 p.m.

But elsewhere, Global will rely on returning hits such as Fox’s “House” and CBS’ “Survivor” franchise to drive its primetime schedule.

Global also will counterprogram nightly at 10 p.m. female-skewing dramas, as NBC’s “The Jay Leno Show” strips in that slot on the rival CityTV stations, and CTV airs mostly investigative crime dramas.

The 10 p.m. strategy will see ABC’s “Brothers & Sisters” air Monday nights in that late-night slot, the CW’s “Melrose Place” on Wednesday nights, the second season of “90210” on Thursdays, and CBS’ “Numbers” will air at 10 p.m. Fridays.

CanWest Global, which picked up 20th Century Fox and CBS Studios product at the Los Angeles Screenings via output deals, also acquired the midseason series “Sons of Tuscon.”

The broadcaster also will program only Global Television in the fall as it continues a sale process for its secondary E1 network.
