Talks set on location work

Negotiations start this week between the showbiz congloms and Local 399 of the Intl. Brotherhood of Teamsters on a new three-year deal for about 440 location scouts, managers and assistants.

Three days of talks will begin Wednesday at the Encino headquarters of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. The current deal runs out on Aug. 1.

Location scouts and managers are among the first below-the-line crew members to be hired on many feature and TV projects.

The AMPTP had no comment regarding the negotiations, but Joseph Kaplan, an attorney for Local 399, told Daily Variety the key issue is likely to be whether the congloms will seek the same terms in the three-year deal ratified in March by the 15 Hollywood-based locals of the Intl. Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees.

IATSE’s Hollywood Basic Agreement, which goes into effect Aug. 1, contains terms and conditions in line with the general outlines of the AMPTP’s deals with the DGA, WGA, AFTRA, SAG and the casting directors, including on new media. The IATSE pact calls for 3% annual wage increases and 35¢ yearly hikes in hourly contribution rates for health and pension.

Kaplan also said the negotiations will probably address the issue of the extensive driving and scouting required for location managers and scouts.
