Venice Fest adds 3D prize
Tuesday July 28th 2009ROME — The Venice Film festival on Monday announced plans for a new sideline award for the festival’s best Stereoscopic 3D film, adding a cutting-edge aspect to the world’s oldest film festival.
The festival also said that this year’s festival, the 66th, will feature a new screening facility, the Sala Perla 2, which will seat 450 and be used for films in the Critic’s Week and Venice Days sidebars. The opening of Sala Perla 2 is part of a broader restructuring plan that also includes re-opening the dock-side of the main Palazzo del Casino building, as the festival prepares for the opening of the new Palazzo del Cinema in 2011.
The 3-D award, sponsored by sunglass maker Persol, will be awarded for “the most creative feature film among those in Steroscopic 3D produced between September 2008 and August 2009.” The film will be selected by a three-person jury made up of Italian director Nadia Ranocchi, U.S. film historian Dave Kehr, and U.S. film critic Scott Foundas.
The festival takes place Sept. 2-12.
