TV producers protest Emmy time-shift

A who’s who group of TV showrunners and producers has signed a petition lambasting this year’s changes to the Primetime Emmy Awards.

The Writers Guild of America, West, released the list this afternoon, which included names including “The Office’s” Greg Daniels, “Family Guy’s” Seth MacFarlane, “Grey’s Anatomy’s” Shonda Rhimes, “Desperate Housewives'” Marc Cherry, “House’s” David Shore and “Mad Men’s” Matt Weiner.

“We, the undersigned showrunners and executive producers of television’s current line-up of programs, oppose the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ decision to remove writing awards from the live telecast,” the petition said. “This decision conveys a fundamental understatement of the importance of writers in the creation of television programming and a symbolic attack on the primacy of writing in our industry. We implore ATAS to restore these awards to their rightful place in the live telecast of the 2009 Emmy Awards.”

The TV Academy announced last week that it would “time-shift” eight of its 28 award presentations during the live Emmycast. The eight affected awards will be comprised of two a piece from writing, directing, performing and producing categories.

“Medium” exec producer Glenn Gordon Caron, who signed the WGA petition, lambasted the move during CBS’ portion of the TV Critics Assn. press tour – an hour before the Emmy producers were slated to give their side of the story to critics.

“Shows are written,” Caron said. “The idea of moving the writing awards off the main broadcast seems short-sighted. This medium, this thing we do, it’s a written medium… It begins with a blank page.”

Here’s a full list of the petition and the producers who signed on:
