‘Young Victoria’ to close Toronto
Wednesday August 05th 2009“The Young Victoria,” starring Emily Blunt as the U.K.’s longest reigning monarch, will close the Toronto Film Festival on Sept 19.
Pic’s cast includes Paul Bettany, who stars as Charles Darwin in “Creation,” which opens the fest on Sept. 10.
“Victoria” was unveiled at Berlin’s European Film Market in February. Martin Scorsese, Graham King, Tim Headington and Sarah Ferguson produced; Canadian Jean-Marc Vallee directed the script by Julian Fellowes (“Gosford Park”).
Announcement of a Stateside distribution deal for the GK Films production is expected imminently. Alliance has snapped up Canadian rights.
Toronto also unveiled its 70-film Canuck slate on Tuesday, with 17 world premiere features.
Galas include world preems of Atom Egoyan’s infidelity drama “Chloe,” with Julianne Moore, Liam Neeson and Amanda Seyfried; and Dilip Mehta’s spicy social satire “Cooking With Stella.” Terry Gilliam’s French-Canadian-British co-production “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus,” which bowed at Cannes, will also receive the gala treatment.
Docu “Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist and Rebel,” helmed by Brigitte Berman, world preems as a special presentation, as will Peter Stebbings’ comedy “Defendor,” starring Woody Harrelson and Kat Dennings; Ruba Nadda’s “Cairo Time,” with Patricia Clarkson; and Jacob Tierney’s teen comedy “The Trotsky.”
Xavier Dolan’s “I Killed My Mother,” winner of three prizes at Cannes, also unspools in Special Presentations.
Toronto’s Contemporary World Cinema section will unveil world preems from fest vets Carl Bessai (small-town drama “Cole”), Bruce Sweeney (romantic comedy “Excited”), Blaine Thurier (thriller “A Gun to the Head”) and Robert Stefaniuk (rock ‘n’ roll vampire comedy “Suck”).
Fest’s docu section Real to Reel includes world preems of Peter Raymont and Michele Hozer’s “Glenn Gould: The Inner Life” and Neil Diamond’s “Reel Injun.”
Vanguard will world preem Reginald Harkema’s murder drama “Leslie, My Name Is Evil.”
Canada First! titles include world preems of “Year of the Carnivore,” a feature helming debut by thesp Sook-Yin Lee; Rob King’s Depression era-set “George Ryga’s Hungry Hills”; Corey Adams and Alex Craig’s “Machotaildrop”; and Alexandre Franchi’s “The Wild Hunt.”
Short Cuts Canada features pics from notables such as animators Chris Landreth and Cordell Barker plus Guy Maddin, John Greyson, Peter Wellington and Min Sook Lee.
