India shows diverse face at Toronto
Tuesday September 01st 2009MUMBAI — A Hollywood film co-produced with Indian financing, an offbeat road movie and a mainstream Bollywood musical will be on offer at this year’s Toronto festival, reflecting the changing face of Indian cinema.
“The Joneses,” starring Demi Moore and David Duchovny is a $10 million project co-financed by Mumbai-based Vistaar Religare Film Fund, slated to premiere at Toronto. “Joneses” is a co-production with Doug Mankoff’s Echo Lake Prods. whose credits include Deepa Mehta’s “Water” and South Africa’s 2006 Oscar winner “Tsotsi” by Gavin Hood. Directed by Derrick Borte, “Joneses” sees Moore and Duchovny as the perfect upscale suburban couple who don’t exactly come clean with the neighbors.
UTV Motion Pictures will unfurl romantic comedy “What’s Your Raashee?” (“What’s Your Star Sign?”) directed by Ashutosh Gowariker and starring actress Priyanka Chopra.
“I’m looking forward to attending and getting the first international reactions and responses to ‘What’s Your Raashee?’ a romantic comedy with 13 songs,” said Gowariker.
“Rashee” will have its world premiere at Toronto on September 19 as a matinee at the Roy Thompson Hall attended by the film’s stars including actor Harman Baweja, Gowariker and producers Ronnie Screwvala and Sunita A. Gowariker.
The Indian Film Company will premiere “Road, Movie” by director Dev Benegal which at this year’s Cannes festival was sold to Fortissimo Films for international sales outside India marking Fortissimo’s debut in Hindi cinema.
“Road, Movie” will be screened as a special presentation at the Winter Garden Theatre on September 18. The film revolves around Vishnu, a restless young man (played by Abhay Deol), who rejects his father’s faltering hair oil business and hits the road with a traveling cinema.
Susan B. Landau (“An Ideal Husband”) and Ross Katz (“Lost In Translation”) produced the film’s original screenplay which was written by Dev Benegal.
IFC CEO Sandeep Bhargava said, “We are delighted and honored that TIFF has chosen to premiere “Road, Movie.” “The invitation is an endorsement of our vision to selectively back high quality international cinema and marks the global interest in Indian films.”
IFC’s upcoming projects include a co-production with “Bend It Like Beckham” director Gurinder Chadha for her in-production feature “It’s A Wonderful Afterlife.”
