French-lingo pix score in Quebec
Thursday September 17th 2009French-language Canuck films had a boffo summer at the box office, nabbing 17.8% of all ticket sales in the mostly French-speaking province of Quebec, up from 8.4% last summer.
The B.O. boom was powered by hit comedy “De pere en flic” (Fathers and Guns), about a father-and-son cop duo in Montreal, which has so far rung up C$9.8 million ($9.1 million). Directed by Emile Gaudreault, produced by Denise Robert and released by Alliance Films, “Father and Guns” grossed more than any Hollywood pic in Quebec this summer.
It is one of the most successful films in the history of Quebecois cinema, second only to Erik Canuel’s 2006 film “Bon Cop, Bad Cop.”
Three other made-in-Quebec films also topped C$1 million ($932,000), including caper comedy “Les doigts croche” (Sticky Fingers), teen drama sequel “A vos marques… Party! 2” and sky-diving pic “Free Fall.”
In addition, 20-year-old, first-time filmmaker Xavier Dolan tasted success on home turf with his Cannes prize-winning entry “J’ai tue ma mere” (I Killed My Mother), which grossed more than $800,000 even though it was on only 17 screens.
Overall ticket sales in Quebec hit a record $83 million this summer, up 16.2% from last summer and beating the previous recordholder, the summer of 2003, when the total gross was $80 million.
