CBC weighs ‘Fancy’ comedy pilot

TORONTO – The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. (CBC) is weighing “Fancy,” a half-hour comedy pilot about a complicated kids TV host from Vancouver-based indie producer Gang of Two and Crescent Entertainment, as a possible 2010 series pick-up.

James Genn directed the “Fancy” pilot for executive producer Jayme Pfahl and producers Wendy Hopkins and Ken Lawson.

The comedy pilot, written by Hopkins and starring Kate Hewlett, Pat McKenna and Jana Peck, follows the host of a kids TV show, Maureen Fancy (Hewlett), who is perky and happy on camera, and anything but off camera as she fends off endless complications in her personal life.

A CBC spokesman said the public broadcaster has just received the pilot, and will decide on an additional 12-episode order early in the new year.

The public broadcaster earlier this week ordered two seasons of the new computer-generated animation series “Pirates!” from Halifax-based indie producer Halifax Films for its morning preschool block, Kids’ CBC.
