173 films qualify for Golden Globe Awards

With its Dec. 15 nominations announcement date fast approaching, the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. said Thursday that 173 live-action feature films, including 105 dramas and 68 comedies or musicals, have qualified for the 67th annual Golden Globe Awards.

Additionally, the Globe voters will make their choices from 133 TV series (79 dramas, 54 comedies), 33 miniseries or telefilms and a record 69 foreign-language films.

Another record was set when 103 songs qualified for the best original song in a motion picture award.

The HFPA also announced its list of qualifying animated feature films. With 15 films qualifying, five nominations will be announced.

The contenders are: “9,” “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel,” “Battle for Terra,” “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs,” “Coraline,” “Disney’s A Christmas Carol,” “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs,” “Mary & Max,” “The Missing Lynx,” “Monsters vs. Aliens,” “Planet 51,” “Ponyo,” “The Princess and the Frog” and “Up.”

The Globe Awards, hosted by Ricky Gervais, will be broadcast live by NBC on Jan. 17 from the Beverly Hilton.
