Sundance’s soiree scene
Thursday January 28th 2010The snow and crowds abated a bit in Sundance’s second week and so did the soirees, with emphasis much firmer on deals.
Monday night, helmer Rodrigo Garcia and his “Mother and Child” cast, including Naomi Watts and Samuel L. Jackson, powwowed at a casual dinner. Garcia’s college roommate, Sony Pictures CEO Michael Lynton, flew in to support his old friend.
Later that night, after the unspooling of Lisa Cholodenko’s fest hit “The Kids Are All Right,” dealmakers and revelers gathered at Cinetic’s annual Monday bash at Zoom. The attic wasn’t as jam-packed as in years past, though suitors for “Kids” — including Focus’s John Lyons and Andrew Karpen — steadily hovered around the film’s helmer, thesp Julianne Moore and Cinetic chief John Sloss, who was part of the film’s dealmaking team.
Tuesday night, producer Ted Hope hosted a cool back-to-basics kegger off Main Street, in honor of a film website he co-founded called Hammer to Nail. The house party was packed to the gills with the fest’s hippest filmmakers.
At a darkly-lit party for “The Romantics” later that night, one of the highlights was live violinist Caitlin Moe, who performed in sync with DJ Mia Moretti.
In a far corner of the room, Sony buyer Scott Shooman jokingly shared what he’d learned from the Sundance films so far: “Don’t fall in love, and definitely don’t try to get married because everyone is doomed to fall out of love, become a philanderer, get laid off or potentially become suicidal.”
