Toronto-tastic ‘Scott Pilgrim’ trailer released

The first trailer for “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World,” the big budget comic book movie shot and set in Toronto and starring Brampton’s Michael Cera was released Thursday to the delight of geeks everywhere.

The film, shot mostly in March 2009 around Toronto, is based on the Bryan Lee O’Malley comic book series, which concludes this year.

Directed by action-comedy guru Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz), the film stars Cera as Toronto’s Scott Pilgrim, the underemployed 22-year-old bassist of Sex Bob-omb in his quest to woo American Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead).

Pilgrim finds out that in order to date Flowers he must defeat her seven evil exes in manga-inspired combat. Much frantic action and banter ensues.

Set mostly around the Annex, Toronto plays a starring role in the film. The trailer features the TTC, Casa Loma and the Toronto Reference Library.

Other Toronto institutions expected to be featured in the film are Lee’s Palace, Sneaky Dee’s and Honest Ed’s.

Toronto band Metric is also featured in the soundtrack, with their music filling in for Pilgrim’s rival band The Clash at Demonhead.

Also starring in the movie are Chris Evans (Fantastic Four), Brandon Routh (Superman Returns), Mae Whitman (Arrested Development) and Jason Schwartzman (Bored to Death, every Wes Anderson movie.)

The film is scheduled to be released August 13.
