  • Tribeca fest looks to shake up indie distrib’n

    With Wednesday night’s world premiere of DreamWorks Animation’s “Shrek Forever After,” the Tribeca Film Festival is not only raising the curtain on its ninth edition, it’s setting out to try and redefine how indie films are distributed. Under the leadership of Tribeca Enterprises’ new chief creative officer, Geoff Gilmore, the Sundance veteran, and TFF executive director Nancy Schafer, the festival will open its doors to a wider online audience with a new initiative, Tribeca Film Festival Virtual.

    “Regardless of what your thoughts are on burning down churches and killing people, let’s say, there is something really fascinating about the fact that they saw a problem in the world and they did something.” Audrey Ewell leans forward as she expresses this thought behind their first documentary during an interview at the AFI festival with her co-director Aaron Aites. It’s an astonishing statement to get your head around, but these two directors spent two years living in Oslo in order to understand a musical movement that rocked a nation in the early 90s and permanently impacted the metal scene around the world.

  • Pixar Canada studio opens in Vancouver

    Disney Pixar officially launched its new Vancouver studio Tuesday, as it ramps up to an eventual 100 artists animating short films based on popular Pixar characters. Pixar Canada, a subsidiary of Pixar Animation Studios, is initially working out of a temporary office in Vancouver’s Gastown district, and hopes to build it out into a permanent 20,000 to 25,000 square foot facility.

    The London world premiere of “Iron Man 2,” planned for April 26, and Tuesday’s European charity premiere of Julie Anne Robinson’s “The Last Song” are the first major movie events to be grounded by the volcanic dust cloud that has shut down airspace across continental Europe. Paramount and Marvel announced late Monday that the world premiere of “Iron Man 2” will be rescheduled to happen in Los Angeles instead of a star-studded London lineup with the film’s stars Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson, Mickey Rourke, Samuel L. Jackson and director Jon Favreau.
