Quentin Tarantino to head Venice jury

ROME — Director, screenwriter and sometimes actor Quentin Tarantino will be the president of the international jury at the 67th edition of the Venice Film Festival, organizers said Thursday.

The auteur behind modern classics such as “Reservoir Dogs,” “Pulp Fiction,” “Kill Bill” and “Inglourious Basterds” is a self-proclaimed fan of Italian film, and is connected to the august Venice festival through two installations of the Secret History of Italian Cinema series: the Italian Kinds of the Bs retrospective in 2004 and the retrospective of Spaghetti Westerns three years later.

Tarantino also appeared onscreen in Miike Takashi’s “Sukiyaki Western Django,” which premiered in competition in Venice two years ago.

In a statement, the festival said Tarantino is “perhaps the only American auteur to be adored world wide like a rock star.”

Among the noted films already announced to appear in competition in Venice are Sofia Coppola’s Hollywood comedy “Somewhere” and “Miral,” a drama from Julian Schnabel.

It will be the second time heading a jury at a major festival for Tarantino, who headed the 2004 jury at the Festival de Cannes.

Venice officials did not announce the name of the rest of the main jury, which will award the festival’s prestigious Gold Lion prize, as well as various secondary awards.

The Venice Film Festival is set to run Sept. 1-10.
