Standing ovation at Cannes for Quebec’s Xavier Dolan

MONTREAL – Quebec filmmaker Xavier Dolan says he’s filled with pride and emotion — particularly relief — following the positive reception of his sophomore effort at the Cannes Film Festival.

The 21-year-old writer, director and actor screened his second film, “Heartbeats,” (Les Amours imaginaires) as part of the festival’s “Un certain regard” category.

“I’ve been in interviews the whole day so I’m just starting to read the reviews,” he told The Canadian Press on Sunday.

“But the public reception was really warm, it was very moving.”

His latest flick received a standing ovation after its screening Saturday and launched Dolan on a whirlwind tour of local and international media interviews.

“Heartbeats” is the bisexual love story of Francis and Marie, two friends infatuated with the same young man who will do almost anything to win him over.

The film is slated to be released in Quebec on June 11 and comes to the rest of Canada this fall.

The young filmmaker, who has admitted to being self-critical and fretting over the film’s reception before jetting to Cannes, said he’s learned to make his peace with reviews.

“You have to take some and leave some,” he said. “But some reviews are very pertinent. Some filmmakers never read the critics. I do.”

Dolan’s 2009 debut, “I Killed my Mother,” was a festival smash hit last year and went on to win a slew of Canadian awards.

Other Canadians at Cannes include Halifax director Noah Pink, who will screen his new film “ZedCrew” as part of the festival’s Directors’ Fortnight program.

Acclaimed Canadian director Atom Egoyan, meanwhile, will serve as president of the Festival de Cannes’ 2010 Cinefondation and Short Film Jury.
