CTV tweaks TV Land Canada’s focus

TORONTO – Canadian broadcaster CTV is tweaking its TV Land Canada cable channel to refocus on classic American sitcoms.

The rebranded Comedy Gold channel from August 2 will air comedies from the 1970s to 1990s, including “Murphy Brown,” “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air,” as it sheds classic U.S. network dramas like “Fantasy Island” and “Wiseguy.”

The rebranding means an end to TV Land Canada as a domestic Canadian version of the American TV Land channel, initially launched in 2001.

CTV already has regulatory approval for the rebranding as it requires no license amendments for a name change to Comedy Gold.

Canada elsewhere has classic TV channels in DejaView and TVtropolis!, but is set to lose Sun TV as a source of U.S. network re-runs as that Toronto-based channel morphs into a right-wing all-news channel modeled on the U.S. Fox News channel from January 1, 2011, pending regulatory approval.
