Google TV plan worries Hollywood

Google revolutionized the way people access information. Now it wants to transform how people get entertainment. The search giant is touting an ambitious new technology, called Google TV, that would marry the Internet with traditional television, enabling viewers to watch TV shows and movies unshackled from the broadcast networks or cable channels on which they air. Users would need to buy a TV or set-top box with Google software that could connect to the Internet, along with a keyboard to type commands. Users could also use their iPhone or Android phone to operate Google TV, explains the Los Angeles Times .

But Hollywood worries that Silicon Valley will upend the entertainment industry just like the Internet ravaged the music and newspaper industries. By bringing the Web directly to the living room TV, entertainment industry executives fear Google TV will encourage consumers to ditch their $70 monthly cable and satellite subscriptions in favor of watching video free via the Internet.

However, it shouldn’t be too hard to develop a Google TV-specific version that would make it possible to send any content you find online straight to your TV set, suggests New Tee Vee. Imagine you’re watching TV while browsing your Facebook feed on your laptop. You stumble across a video a friend recommended in your feed, click on a simple TV button in your browser and the clip shows up full screen on your flat screen.

The idea of the browser as a remote control for your connected TV or set-top box isn’t new. In fact, there have been a number of attempts at using the iPad as a remote control. However, most of these were based on dedicated apps, which force you to switch back and forth between the Web and the TV remote.
