SPC, Weinstein Co. nab films at Toronto

TORONTO — The dealmaking continued at a deliberate pace at the Toronto International Film Festival on Monday as Sony Pictures Classics made its first buy of the fest by picking up the French and Arabic-language “Incendies.”

The Weinstein Co. also continued to assert its presence at TIFF, closing a deal for Abe Sylvia’s road-trip comedy “Dirty Girl” by ponying up about $3 million for rights to the U.S., U.K., France, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

Denis Villeneuve’s “Incendies” is the story of twins, a brother and sister, who, following the death of their mother, travel to the Middle East to search for a brother and father they’ve never met.

The film, based on a stage play by Wajdi Mouawad, played to positive reactions at the Venice and Telluride fests, and SPC’s six-figure deal was concluded before the movie’s first public screening Monday evening.

SPC negotiated the deal with Charlotte Mickie, executive vp of eOne Films International, which has also sold the title to Happiness Distribution (France), Arsenal (Germany), Cineart (Benelux), Lucky Red (Italy), Filmcoopi (Switzerland), Shani Films (Israel) and ECS (Middle East).

“With ‘Incendies,’ Denis Villeneuve has become the major filmmaker predicted by his previous movies,” the SPC team said.

“Incendie,” in French and Arabic, was produced by Luc Dery and Kim McCraw of Micro_scope in co-production with TS Prods. and in association with Phi Group.

As for “Dirty Girl,” it stars Juno Temple as a teenage outcast who strikes out on a cross-country adventure in search of her real dad. The cast also includes Milla Jovovich, William H. Macy, Mary Steenburgen and Dwight Yoakam.

Producers are Rob Paris, Jana Edelbaum, Rachal Cohen and Charles Pugliese. Exec producers include Killer Films’ Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler.

The deal, with WME repping domestic and the Salt Co. handling international sales, went down while the movie’s first screening was taking place.

In other action, Madman Entertainment has picked up the Australian and New Zealand rights from Hyde Park International for Occupant Films’ comedy “Peep World,” which is scheduled to screen Wednesday night.

Directed by Barry W. Blaustein from a Peter Himmelstein script, the film centers on four siblings who, on the day of their father’s 70th birthday, must come to terms with the publication of a novel written by the youngest brother that exposes the neurotic family’s best kept secrets.

The ensemble cast includes Michael C. Hall, Sarah Silverman, Rainn Wilson, Taraji P. Henson, Judy Greer, Ron Rifkin, Alicia Witt and Ben Schwartz.

The deal continues to underline Toronto’s emerging sales market and continues Occupant’s record of Toronto sales, which in the past have included “All the Boys Love Mandy Lane” and “The Wackness.”

North American rights, which remain available, are being handled by CAA.
