Canadian Film/TV Hall of Fame ceremony – a roof-top gala event

By David Pearson, TO411 Staff Writer

Mid-TIFF was perfect timing to celebrate Paul Bronfman, John Candy (posthumously), Don Carmody, Paul Haggis, Alanis Obomsawin, Donald Sutherland, and David Suzuki’s induction into The Canadian Film and Television Hall of Fame.

The introduction speeches given by their peers (like those delivered by Jewison and Pinsent) were uniformly warm and laced with enough comedy to keep the roof-top audience in high spirits.

The acceptance speeches from the recipients in attendance were humble and gracious, yet showed their deep passion for the Canadian Film and Television Industry.

One quote, by Former CHUM CEO Jay Switzer, to the benefit of Paul Bronfman, could easily be applied to all the inductees:

“Paul is exceptionally worthy of this award, in part because he maintains a youthful enthusiastic love of our business that is second to none,” Switzer said. “There is no greater fanatical supporter of the Canadian film and television business than Paul Bronfman and this passion for our industry has been part of his life for three decades. Yes, this is a business, but to Paul it is more than a business. Paul is a leader who makes our industry better.”
