Canada picks ‘Incendies’ for Oscar

Canuck helmer Denis Villeneuve’s “Incendies” is Canada’s submission in Oscar’s foreign-language category.

The Montreal writer-director’s adaptation of the 2003 play written by Wajdi Mouawad has unspooled in the Venice, Telluride and Toronto film festivals.

Pic tells the story of two Montreal siblings who travel to the Middle East to deliver letters written by their dead mother to a father they thought was long-dead and a brother they didn’t know existed.

Sony Pictures Classics recently acquired U.S. rights to the pic, which was produced Luc Dery and Kim McCraw from Montreal’s Microscope.

Submissions for the foreign language Oscar must reach the Academy by 5 p.m. Oct. 1. Nominations will be announced on Jan. 25. The 83rd Academy Awards will be held at the Kodak Theater on Feb. 27.
