    Hollywood star Daniel Day-Lewis will play 16th US president Abraham Lincoln in a biopic to be directed by Oscar-winner Steven Spielberg. Lincoln, adapted by playwright Tony Kushner from Doris Kearns Goodwin book Team of Rivals. Spielberg has been attached to the project for years and earlier Liam Neeson was attached to star as Lincoln. Kushner and Spielberg had earlier teamed up for Oscar-nominated Munich.

    Far away from the local multiplex, Cineplex Entertainment is selling Hollywood movie titles to Canadians. The Canuck exhibition giant has joined the movie download business, allowing Canadians to rent or buy movies from its own website, Cineplex.com, day and date with DVDs and Blu-ray releases.

  • Warner Bros. probe ‘Potter’ leak

    Warner Bros. is probing the leak of more than half an hour of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1” on Internet file-sharing sites this week. “This constitutes a serious breach of copyright violation and theft of Warner Bros. property,” the studio said in a statement Wednesday. “We are vigorously investigating this matter and will prosecute those involved to the full extent of the law.” The first 36 minutes of the seventh Potter pic became available for download on several file-sharing sites such as BitTorrent.

  • Canada’s Alliance Films Partners With Italy’s Medusa

    Combining their respective territorial bulk, Canadian movie distributor Alliance Films is to partner with Italy’s Medusa Film on feature film acquisitions and co-productions. Alliance Film chairman Victor Loewy and Medusa Film CEO Giampaolo Letta have unleashed their respective execs to co-produce films or jointly acquire multi-territory rights. The pact will see Medusa release product in Italy, with Alliance distributing in Canada and in the U.K. via its local outfit Momentum Pictures and in Spain through Aurum Producciones.
