Netflix Canada signs TV Licensing Deals

TORONTO — Not to leave its Canadian subscribers too out in the cold with U.S. TV shows available only to Netflix’s American subscribers, the U.S. video streaming giant has added a raft of Canadian and U.S. programming to its Canuck online video subscription service.

Netflix Canada said it has snagged the streaming rights to Canadian series like The Tudors, Men with Brooms and Being Erica as part of a licensing deal with the Canadian Broadcasting Corp.

And Netflix Canada subscribers also secured access to U.S. network and cable series like the first two seasons of Weeds andThe Big C from distributor Maple Pictures, and Merlin andPulling from FremantleMedia Enterprises.

The latest additions to the Netflix Canada lineup aim to reduce criticism that its Canadian online video streaming service lacks many film and TV titles only available to American subscribers owing to rights issues.

That gap revealed itself last week when Netflix struck a deal with ABC for content from its main network and the Disney Channel.

“We strive to bring our members in Canada popular TV shows and movies we know they’ll enjoy,” Kelly Merryman, Netflix vp of content acquisitions, said on the company’s blog site.

“We’ve been working on several deals, and I am very pleased to let everyone know that we are adding hundreds of TV shows that can be watched instantly on TVs and computers, and will be made available starting today and over the next few weeks,” the Netflix exec added.
