Three Canadian directors rank among Variety’s ones to watch

Three Canadian filmmakers were featured in industry rag Variety’s list of directors to watch in 2011. Homegrown directors Denis Villeneuve, Patrick Lussier and Ed Gass-Donnelly were among the ten directors listed by Variety, all of whom will be honoured at a breakfast reception hosted by Mark Wahlberg at the Palm Springs International Film Festival on Sunday.

Other directors to make the list were Richard Ayoade (Submarine), Daniel Espinosa (Snabba Cash, Safe House), Elgin James (Little Birds), Baran Bo Odar (The Silence), Andre Ovredal (The Troll Hunter), Juanita Wilson (As If I Am Not There) and Jason Winer (Arthur). Each of the featured directors will be profiled in this Friday’s issue of Variety.

Villeneuve’s Incendies is Canada’s bid this year for best foreign film at the Academy Awards.
