Genie Awards to be held in Ottawa

The 2011 Genie Awards will be held in Ottawa, the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television announced.

This is the 31st year for the awards, which celebrate the best in Canadian film. The gala show will be held at the National Arts Centre this year, though it was held at the Canada Aviation Museum when Ottawa hosted the event in 2009.

“It makes sense to celebrate the Genie Awards on a national stage and we can do that in Ottawa,” said Sara Morton, the CEO of the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television.

Film nominations begin Feb. 2 with this year’s top films such as Denis Villeneuve’s Incendies, which was nominated for a best foreign film Oscar this week, and Barney’s Version, starring Paul Giammati, expected to be front-runners.
