ROTTERDAM, Netherlands – Montreal director Denis Villeneuve’s Oscar-nominated drama “Incendies” has won an audience award at the Rotterdam Film Festival.
“Incendies” beat out nine other films for the honour, including Academy Award-nominated “Black Swan” and “Biutiful.”
Festival head Rutger Wolfson said in a statement that one of the highlights of this year’s movie marathon was “the attendance by prominent filmmakers,” including Villeneuve.
“Incendies” and “Biutiful” (of Mexico) are both up for this year’s best-foreign language film Oscar, against Greece’s “Dogtooth,” Denmark’s “In a Better World” and Algeria’s “Outside the Law.”
“Incendies,” about Quebec twins who uncover dark secrets from their mother’s past, also recently landed 10 Genie Award nominations, including best film.
