David Cronenberg to direct his first TV series

Canadian filmmaker David Cronenberg is set to direct and produce his first TV series, Knifeman, based on an 18th-century surgeon who was a pioneer of modern medicine.

A representative from Media Rights Capital (MRC) said that Cronenberg will direct and act as executive producer of the series.

According to the independent film and television studio, Knifeman has not been sold yet but the current focus is on creating a pilot which will be filmed over the next few months.

Usually, Cronenberg’s films are marked by their exploration of the human psyche, but Knifeman will explore the human body.

The series is based on a 2005 biography by Wendy Moore, The Knife Man, which depicts the life of John Hunter, an 18th century surgeon credited with bringing the scientific method to medicine.

Historically, Hunter has been credited with learning his surgical craft by stealing cadavers from graveyards with his brother William, and mapping out biological abnormalities in them. Detective writer Ian Rankin has argued that Hunter was an inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson’s Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

Cronenberg has directed a number of films including Naked Lunch, A History of Violence and most recently A Dangerous Method, which one five Genie Awards last week.

Other executive producers of the show will be Sam Raimi, who directed the Spider Man films, Josh Donen and Robert Zotnowski.

The first episode of Knifeman is being written by Rolin Jones, who won an Emmy in 2010 for Friday Night Lights.
