Quebec film Starbuck to be remade by Steven Spielberg and DreamWorks Studios

Starbuck, a made-in-Quebec film that found success on last year’s festival circuit, has been picked up for an American remake by Steven Spielberg’s DreamWorks Studios.

According to reports, producer Andre Rouleau said Spielberg was “enthralled” by the movie after seeing it last month. Production on the English-language version of the film will begin in New York this fall, and the casting process is already underway.

The film, which was a runner-up for the Audience Choice award at the Toronto International Film Festival, follows a man who unwittingly fathers over 500 children through his donations to a sperm bank. Actor Patrick Huard played the lead role of David Wozniak, who goes undercover to meet some of the 142 offspring who have filed a court order to meet him.

Screenwriters Ken Scott and Martin Petit named their film after a famed bull that fathered more than 200,000 calves during a lifespan of 19 years. Scott, who directed the original film, will also write and direct its remake.

No casting details have been released yet, but those wishing to see the original Starbuck can now pick it up on DVD.
