A film about disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong is in development

Paramount Pictures and Star Trek director JJ Abrams have optioned the forthcoming book Cycle of Lies: The Fall of Lance Armstrong by New York Times reporter Juliet Macur.

Their production company, Bad Robot will develop the book for the big screen according to online magazine Deadline.

It is not clear whether JJ Abrams will direct the film or when it might be released.

Macur has covered Armstrong’s career for over a decade, documenting his battle with cancer, his seven Tour de France wins and then his subsequent fall from grace.

Macur signed a book deal with Harper Collins late last year and the book is due out in the United States this summer.

A biopic on Lance Armstrong had been in development at Sony before the scandal broke, with Hollywood star Jake Gyllenhaal reported to be in line for the starring role.

The film would have shown Armstrong as a heroic figure who overcame his cancer battle to rise to the top of his sport.

In light of Armstrong’s doping confession the film is now incredibly unlikely to proceed in its original form.

Last week during an interview with Oprah Winfrey Armstrong admitted using performance-enhancing drugs to win the Tour de France seven times.

Former masseur and assistant on the US Postal team Emma O’Reilly, who was called an “alcoholic whore” by Lance Armstrong, is considering taking legal action against him.
