Paul W.S. Anderson to shoot Pompeii in Toronto

Pompeii, a 3D action film set in ancient times and sure to have an explosive ending, is coming to Toronto’s Cinespace Film Studios.
The film, a co-production of Don Carmody Productions and Germany’s Constantin Film, is set to begin shooting in April at Cinespace’s 30-acre Kipling Ave. studio site.

“It’s very exciting. It’s a huge visual effects project. It’s going to be a big action adventure with very cool visuals and a lot of suspense,” said veteran producer Don Carmody (Chicago, Good Will Hunting).

The film stars Kit Harington, who plays Jon Snow on the HBO series Game of Thrones, is set to start as Milo, a young gladiator. Australian actress Emily Browning (Sucker Punch) will play his love interest.

The film will be directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, who has previously laid waste to Toronto locales with the gory and highly profitable Resident Evil franchise.

Carmody, who estimated the film’s budget at more than $80 million, said it will be similar in style to another film set in ancient times, 1997’s 300, which recounts the Battle of Thermopylae.

The ancient Roman city of Pompeii was destroyed in 79 A.D. when nearby Mount Vesuvius, near modern-day Naples, exploded in volcanic fury.

“There will be vast expanses of Roman architecture being built for Pompeii,” said Cinespace vice-president Jim Mirkopoulos.

Mirkopoulos said this is the third major co-production between Carmody and Constantin Films, which shot Resident Evil: Retribution and The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, the hotly anticipated film that is set for release in August, at the Kipling Ave. studio site.
