Kim Nguyen’s ‘War Witch’ Sweeps Quebec Film Awards

Having cleaned up at the recent Canadian Screen Awards, Kim Nguyen’s Congo child-soldier drama War Witch on Sunday night swept the Jutras, Quebec’s film awards.

The Oscar contender, also known as Rebelle, won Jutras for best film, best director for Nguyen and best actress for Rachel Mwanza.
In all, War Witch earned eight of the nine Jutra categories it challenged in.

That mirrored the recent Canadian Screen Awards, where Nguyen’s French-language film came into the national awards show with 12 nominations and came away with 10 trophies, including best film, best direction, best actress for Mwanza and best supporting actor for Serge Kayinda.

The Jutra for best actor went to veteran Quebec actor Julien Poulin for his star turn as an emotionally wounded trucker in Camion, while Kayinda won for best supporting actor.

And the prize for the biggest Quebec film to perform outside the French-speaking province went to Philippe Falardeau for Monsieur Lazhar.

The Jutras aired Sunday night on Radio Canada.
