New Version Of Poltergeist To Be Filmed In Toronto

A new version of the hit Steven Spielberg movie “Poltergeist” will be filmed late this summer in Toronto.

Global News recently learned that although casting has yet to be announced, Gil Kenan (“Monster House”) has been hired to direct from a screenplay co-written by David Lindsay-Abaire (“Oz the Great and Powerful,” “Rise of the Guardians”), while Sam Raimi (“Spider-Man” trilogy) has been brought on as a co-producer.

Shooting of the new version of the 1982 horror flick will take place from mid-September until the end of November at Pinewood Toronto Studios.

The original movie, starring JoBeth Williams and Craig T. Nelson, was nominated for three Oscars and won the BAFTA Film Award for Best Special Visual Effects. The storyline followed the Freeling family, whose home is invaded by supernatural forces that abduct their daughter through a portal in her bedroom. As RadioTimes pointed out, it was the highest-grossing horror film of 1982, making $75 million. It also had two sequels.

According to multiple sources, the new Poltergeist will pick up several years after the original and focus on the Bowen family, whose daughter is abducted by a supernatural force after they move to a new town, and a parapsychologist at a local university is called in to investigate.
