Toronto Festival Unveils Additional World Premieres
Thursday August 08th 2013“Incendies” helmer Denis Villeneuve’s psychological thriller “Enemy,” based on Jose Saramago’s novel “The Double” and starring Jake Gyllenhaal as a man and his double, will world preem in the Toronto International Film Festival’s Special Presentations program next month.
The festival added 20 Canuck feature pics to the slate, including ensemble drama “All The Wrong Reasons,” the feature-helming bow of Gia Milani, starring late Canadian thesp Cory Monteith (“Glee”) as an ambitious department store manager whose wife is coping with a family tragedy.
Special Presentations will unspool the world preems of Michael Dowse’s romantic comedy “The F Word” (pictured, above), starring Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan, Bruce McDonald’s domestic intrigue “The Husband,” and Jennifer Baichwal and Edward Burtynsky’s 5K-HD-lensed doc “Watermark,” a global story of water use.
The program also added the North American preems of Louise Archambault’s “Gabrielle” and Xavier Dolan’s “Tom At The Farm.”
Contemporary World Cinema will see the world preems of Peter Stebbings’ “Empire of Dirt,” which tracks a woman’s last-ditch attempt to escape from her family’s cycle of abuse and addiction; Catherine Martin’s “A Journey,” about a young girl who travels to the Gaspe Peninsula after her mother dies; Ingrid Veninger’s “The Animal Project,” about an unorthodox acting teacher (Aaron Poole) pushing young thesps out of their comfort zone; Terry Miles’ “Cinemanovels,” in which a woman preps a film retrospective for her late estranged father; Bruce Sweeney’s “The Dick Knost Show,” a satire on sports-talk culture; and Wiebke von Carolsfeld’s “Stay,” starring Taylor Schilling (“Orange is the New Black”) as a young woman who discovers she’s pregnant and her lover is not interested in fatherhood.
Richie Mehta’s “Siddharth” and Sebastien Pilote’s “Le Demantelement” will receive their North American preems in CWC.
In addition to “All the Wrong Reasons,” the festival’s Discovery program will deliver the world preem of Jeff Barnaby’s “Rhymes for Young Ghouls,” (see above) about a teenage “weed princess” who decides to fight back after being kicked out of the Red Crow reservation’s residential school. Discovery will also screen Chloe Robichaud’s “Sarah Prefers to Run.”
The Masters strand will world-preem “Triptych,” Robert Lepage and Pedro Pires’ urban saga exploring the lives of a schizophrenic bookseller, a singer-actress and a neurologist.
Vanguard adds the world preem of “Asphalt Watches,” Seth Scriver and Shayne Ehman’s animated pic based on their real-life hitch-hiking trip of 2000. Bruce LaBruce’s “Gerontophilia” gets it North American preem in the program.
Thesps Evelyne Brochu (“Tom At The Farm”), Cara Gee “Empire of Dirt”), Megan Park (“The F Word”) and Johnathan Sousa (“The Animal Project”) were announced as the 2013 TIFF Rising Stars, and will participate in an immersive professional development program.
Toronto also announced that, for the first time this year, all the pics (39) in its Short Cuts Canada program will screen on YouTube.com/TIFF 24 hours after their fest preems, and until Sept. 19, 2013.
The 2013 Toronto International Film Festival runs Sept. 5 to 15, 2013.
