No Pixar film for 2014 as The Good Dinosaur and Finding Dory release dates pushed back

For the first time since Pixar was bought in 2005 by Disney, the animation studio will let a summer pass without releasing a new film. The Good Dinosaur, originally scheduled to come out on May 30 next year, has been pushed back 18 months to November 2015.

The delay is not surprising as Pixar recently removed The Good Dinosaur’s director, Bob Peterson, from the movie with only nine months to go before release. Pixar’s president Ed Catmull explained that the studio hadn’t been happy with the creative development of the film.

He said “Nobody ever remembers the fact that you slipped a film, but they will remember a bad film. Our conclusion was that we were going to give the [dinosaur] film some more time.”

This isn’t the first time Pixar have fired a film’s director only months before the release date. In 2005, Jan Pinkava was replaced as director of Ratatouille by Brad Bird, fresh from his success with The Incredibles. Although the change of director worked out brilliantly for Ratatouille, it didn’t prove such a shot in the arm for Brave (2012). Brenda Chapman was fired from that film in 2009 after working on the picture for six years.

Although Pixar have not yet announced The Good Dinosaur’s new director, but at the Disney Convention D23 Expo in August the film’s premise was unveiled: a counter-factual earth. Far from becoming extinct, the dinosaurs have watched the asteroid sail harmlessly by, while they devote themselves to millennia of farming. In the film, they come into contact with humans for the first time. John Lithgow and Frances McDormand lead the cast.

The rest of Disney’s release schedule has been rejigged to accommodate The Good Dinosaur’s postponement. Into its original release spot of May 30 2014, the non-Pixar Disney film Maleficent will be advanced, a live action version of Sleeping Beauty starring Angelina Jolie. By taking the November 2015 slot, The Good Dinosaur will bump Finding Nemo’s long-awaited sequel, Finding Dory, further down the line. Meanwhile, Inside Out, the daring Pixar film set inside the brain of a young girl, will hold its original place in June 2015.
