Oscar nominations 2014: American Hustle, Gravity lead the pack with 10 nods each; Inside Llewyn Davis shut out

American Hustle will hope to continue its winning streak at the 86th annual Academy Awards, as the Golden Globe winner for best motion picture, comedy, earned ten Oscar nominations on Thursday, putting it at the head of this year’s pack alongside Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity.

Both of those films also picked up top notices for their leading ladies, with American Hustle’s Amy Adams and Gravity’s Sandra Bullock going head to head in the best actress category. American Hustle picked up nominations in all four acting categories, with Christian Bale nominated for best lead actor, Jennifer Lawrence up for best supporting actress and Bradley Cooper nominated for best supporting actor. Lawrence and Adams picked up Golden Globes for their work in the film on Sunday.

The Coen brother’s Inside Llewyn Davis, which was named the year’s best film by the Toronto Film Critics Association and the National Society of Film Critics, was shut out of the major categories, earning only technical nominations.

Also snubbed was Tom Hanks for his work in Captain Phillips and Robert Redford for All is Lost. Both those men earned Golden Globe nominees for their performances this year. Oprah Winfrey too was widely expected to earn a supporting nomination for her work in The Butler; she did not see her name listed among the nominees.

Director Jean-Marc Vallée is Canada’s strongest presence among this year’s nominees, having earned a best picture nomination for his Dallas Buyers Club, as well as lead and supporting actor nominations. Arcade Fire’s Will Butler is also among the homegrown talents who will vie for Oscar gold in February, having been nominated alongside frequent collaborator and fellow Canuck Owen Pallet for his work on the score of Spike Jonze’s film Her.

The 86th annual Academy Awards will take place March 2, with Ellen DeGeneres hosting for the second time. A full list of this year’s nominees is below.
