Rights to Rob Ford book ‘Crazy Town’ bought by Toronto production company
Monday February 10th 2014Toronto Mayor Rob Ford’s story is one step closer to appearing on the big screen.
A Toronto-based production company, Blue Ice Pictures, announced it has bought the film and television rights to Crazy Town: The Rob Ford Story, a new book by Toronto Star reporter Robyn Doolittle.
Producers Daniel Iron and Lance Samuels said they will produce an adaptation of the book. No further details were available.
“This is a story about the city in which I have lived my entire life and has great political, cultural and civic meaning to me,” Mr. Iron said in a release on Monday.
Mr. Iron and Mr. Samuels previously worked together on The Bang Bang Club, a film about combat photographers in South Africa. Mr. Iron also worked on Away From Her and Watermark. Mr. Samuels’ body of work includes The Book of Negroes and Inescapable.
Mr. Ford admitted last fall that he had tried crack cocaine in a “drunken stupor.” He later vowed to give up alcohol, but acknowledged he had been drinking “a little bit” when he was recorded last month speaking incoherently in Jamaican patois and using vulgar language to describe Police Chief Bill Blair at a restaurant.
The mayor has not addressed questions surrounding his recent visit to a pub in Coquitlam. B.C., in which the Toronto Star alleged he ordered rounds of alcoholic beverages after closing time. The newspaper also quoted an unidentified source saying that Mr. Ford spent more than an hour in a washroom and emerged appearing impaired and speaking gibberish.
