TV, film production in Toronto surpasses $1B for third straight year

Film and television production in Toronto surpassed $1 billion for the third year in a row despite a slight drop in major movie productions.

Often touted as “Hollywood North,” approximately $948 million was invested in major productions in Toronto throughout 2013. That’s down slightly from 2012 which was bolstered by huge productions like RoboCop and Pacific Rim.

But the overall industry was buoyed by an increase in commercials, music video and animation.

In total, $1.18 billion was invested across all four categories.

And most of that came from television productions including Defiance, Hemlock Grove, Hannibal, Orphan Black, Copper, Transporter, The Listener, Nikita, Covert Affairs, Suits, XIII, Warehouse 13, Lost Girl, Murdoch Mysteries, and The Strain.
