TIFF launches $300-a-ticket ‘Buzz List’ package

How much is it worth to see the most talked-about movies at TIFF?

The 39th Toronto International Film Festival is premiering a new $1,500 Buzz List Pack ticket package this fall, with priority access to five premium screenings.

Just 50 of these high-end specialty ticket bundles will be available for TIFF, which runs Sept. 4 to 14.

“We created the Buzz List Pack in response to demand for more premium packages for audiences looking for a fully tailored premium experience of big-ticket films,” said TIFF director of communications Pamela Mollica.

Galas and Special Presentation films are the likely candidates for the package; think movies with plenty of stars on the red carpet that are generating serious critical and Oscar chatter. TIFF will begin announcing the films on this year’s slate July 22; the program book and official film schedule will be released Aug. 19.

“It’s a test for us. We’re only making 50 (Buzz List Packs) available,” Mollica added. “If they sell out, we’ll look at doing it again next year.”

For their $300 per movie, ticket holders get a priority lineup into first screenings — where stars and filmmakers are most likely to attend. TIFF programmers will chose the five “buzzworthy films with a red-carpet experience,” based on having seen the films, plus impressions from early audience and media interest.

All TIFF choice package buyers, including Buzz List Pack, will receive an email with film selections on Aug. 30, the day before single tickets go on sale Aug. 31 at the festival box office at Metro Centre, 225 King St. W.

Ticket prices have gone up slightly this year. Regular single tickets are now $24, up from $23.50 last year and premium seats are $46, up from $45.50.

Also new this year, people can skip the final screening and go to the TIFF closing-night party for $100 per ticket.
The popular rush lines, which give people a chance to buy unused seats for sold-out screenings 15 minutes before films start, will now be cash only ($20 regular and $40 premium) in order to get people inside more efficiently.
Ticket packages go on sale June 24 for TIFF members, July 2 for Visa cardholders and July 9 for the public at tiff.net/festival, by phone at 416-599-TIFF or 1-888-599-8433, or in person at TIFF Bell Lightbox.
