Cinespace Film Studio attracts film, TV series, christening south Etobicoke the ‘Burbank of Canada’
Friday August 08th 2014South Etobicoke is being dubbed “Burbank of Canada” due to the many highly acclaimed TV shows and movies being filmed here that create hundreds of jobs.
It took dozens of workers weeks to build a replica of a Kandahar air base for shooting the television show Combat Hospital and then Moscow’s famed Red Square for top-grossing Resident Evil 5 in a parking lot of Cinespace Film Studios, on Kipling Avenue.
Cinespace vice-president Jim Mirkopoulos said up to 2,000 people can be working at the 30-acre Film Studio Campus on some days shooting TV hits as Reign, Beauty and the Beast, The Strain and 12 Monkeys, a science-fiction drama set to air next year.
Mirkopoulos on this day was giving a tour of the 750,000 square feet facility to Etobicoke-Lakeshore MP Bernard Trottier, in whose riding the studio is located; fellow MPs Stella Ambler, Rick Dykstra and Senator Don Meredith.
He said the highly acclaimed Reign, a period drama set in medieval times, occupies 10 sets and employs about 600 people.
It costs up to $3 million to shoot an hour-long episode and 22 episodes are planned.
The studio is crawling with carpenters, electricians and construction workers who are building elaborate medieval castles, courtyards and hallways required for Reign. Not far away, wardrobe designers work on costumes and others on props that the actors will use.
“Right now we are completely filled,” Mirkopoulos said. “This is the largest campus of its kind anywhere in Canada and we are at capacity until next April.”
His family has been in the film business for about 26 years and have another studio on Booth Avenue, and a third on Eastern Avenue in The Beaches.
They purchased the old Consumers Glass facility about five years ago and converted it into a studio, where space is rented out to production companies for filming TV programs and movies.
“We decided to expand to Etobicoke because Toronto is getting harder to find more space to expand,” Mirkopoulos said. “Here it’s accessible, we have lots of space and we are close to the airport.”
Television and movie producers and directors also love working here because it is away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Toronto.
“We don’t need another downtown location to shoot at,” said Felix Gray, the First Assistant Director of Reign. “We like working in Etobicoke because everything is close and accessible.”
John Weber, the executive producer of Reign and Beauty and the Beast, agreed.
“Etobicoke is fabulous place for us to shoot,” Weber said. “The location is great because we are near the airport and close to a lot of our suppliers.”
Some popular movie and TV shows filmed at the campus includes: Gladiator, Pompeii, Hannibal, Hemlock Grove, Enemy; The Mortal Instruments, The Expanse and CBC’s Murdoch Mysteries.
Trottier, who organized the tour, said the film industry creates jobs and stimulates the local economy.
“I am very pleased by the number of jobs this industry creates,” he said. “South Etobicoke is now the Burbank of Canada.”
Burbank is a city in California that is home to many of the world’s top movie studios.
